Adults with Pre-Diabetes

City: District of Columbia
Measurement Period: 2017
This indicator depicts the percentage of adults that have ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they have pre-diabetes or borderline diabetes.

Women who were told that they have pre-diabetes or borderline diabetes during the course of their pregnancy were not included in this count.

Why is this important?

Pre-diabetes is characterized by blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes and is almost always the pre-cursor to developing type 2 diabetes.  Recent research has shown that some long-term damage to the body, especially the heart and circulatory system, may already be occurring during pre-diabetes however type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by lifestyle modifications including eating healthy, being physically active, and weight management.  If pre-diabetes develops into diabetes, it can have a harmful effect on most of the organ systems in the human body; it is a frequent cause of end-stage renal disease, non-traumatic lower-extremity amputation, and a leading cause of blindness among working age adults. Persons with diabetes are also at increased risk for ischemic heart disease, neuropathy, and stroke.
