An Effective Practice

This practice has been Archived and is no longer maintained.

Description

The goal of the Coalition to Reduce HIV in Broward County is to increase awareness of the HIV problem and decrease incidence of sexually transmitted infections among 18-39 year olds in the African-American, Caribbean, and Hispanic communities.

The Coalition conducted a community needs assessment from 1999-2000 and then designed a multilevel, multi-sector, and multi-phased intervention in order to enhance the essential services provided by the Broward County Health Department. Intervention activities included: HIV/AIDS education outreach sessions, various culturally competent resident-focused HIV/AIDS outreach activities, training of community volunteers in HIV prevention, and providing HIV prevention supplies to the target population.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the Coalition to Reduce HIV in Broward County is to eliminate disparities in HIV disease in Broward County.

Impact

Disparities in new diagnoses of HIV among Hispanic residents of Broward County were eliminated and cut in half among non-Hispanic residents.

Results / Accomplishments

Disparities in new diagnoses of HIV among Hispanic residents of Broward County were eliminated and cut in half among non-Hispanic residents.
